Yarragon Village

Originally known as Waterloo, the town began as an overnight stop on the Gippsland track in the 1850's.Timber and produce was being shipped to Melbourne in vast quantities as a result of the gold rush in central and western Victoria. At the same time miners were rushing to the goldfields of east Gippsland and the Omeo high country.

The first shops opened in 1879 and the first hotel began in 1880. Electricity was installed only 43 years later, a remarkable feat. The township changed its name to Yarragon in 1883 and the continuing boom in the timber industry saw the Yarragon Township prosper.

The Village has retained its charm while managing to cater to an ever-increasing tourist industry. Many coach companies and travellers are realising that Yarragon is a convenient stop when travelling along the coast between Melbourne and Sydney, also as a gateway to east Gippsland. The foresight shown by the Yarragon locals in the early1980's is now being realised.

Travelling to Yarragon is easily done via car, coach, train and so on. The train service is frequent with at least 12 services per day. The coach and train are within easy walk of Stanbyrne Cottages.

Yarragon was devastated by floods (1934) and fires (Black Friday 1939) but the residents overcame the adversity to rebuild the town and many of their descendants still call Yarragon home.
